Markham – Colegrave International Scholarship

Markham – Colegrave International Scholarship Award – $4,500 USD

Ed Markham was an international horticulturist. He began a career in horticulture sales after graduating from the Horticulture Department at Cornell University in 1942. Ed’s interest in providing scholarship funds to study marketing through international travel stemmed from his first trip abroad in the early 1960s and in later life to combine efforts with David Colegrave and encourage others to do likewise and have opportunities and experiences while travelling to broaden knowledge.

David Colegrave left the UK after the Second World War to work in Canada for the old-established Canadian seed producer, McKenzie Seeds. Following this he spent five years working in the flower seed production industry in California followed by another five years back in Europe working for a well-known French flower breeding company before returning to the UK to start his own business specialising in the sale of flower seeds to professional growers.

$4,500 for the opportunity to organise a work placement in a horticultural business in the US/Canada.

Current or recent horticultural students who are actively seeking to gain work experience in the USA or Canada. You may already have secured a work placement but need financial help for travel and accommodation costs.

The Scholarship is presented as a joint award from the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation (CSF) and the American Floral Endowment (AFE), US. The two charities combine their services to support the development of the ornamental horticulture and floriculture industry through scholarships. It is funded by cooperation between the Ed Markham Scholarship Fund and CSF in honour of Ed Markham and David Colegrave.
