We are delighted that Apple Peter’s Gold has been named as the Best New Plant at the industry trade show GLEE, held at the NEC from September 10th -12th 2024.

The apple was discovered by the late Peter Seabrook, growing on a roadside verge near his home in Chelmsford. Peter recognised that the unknown and unnamed apple had exceptional qualities and took it to Frank P Matthews, the specialist fruit tree grower in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire.  Here, the apple was trialed and found to be an exceptional apple with excellent commercial potential.

A late season variety, the large fruits start green, ripening to a reddish gold, are crisp and juicy and store well – keeping well into the New Year.  After 12 years of growing and trialing the apple was ready to launch in the summer of 2024. Sadly Peter Seabrook was no longer alive to see confirmation that he had indeed discovered a brilliant apple variety and see it brought to market.

In recognition of Peter’s commitment and dedication to the horticultural industry, Matthew’s decided to name the apple Apple Peter’s Gold. They aslo agrred to donate a portion of the profits from the sale of all Apple Peter’s Gold sold to the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation. We are extremely grateful to them for this donation.

Look out for Apple Peter’s Gold in your local garden centre – on sale from this Autumn or you can purchase direct from F P Matthews via their on-line shop Peter’s Gold™ Apple | Frank P Matthews Fruit Trees
