More careers podcasts added to our Cultivate Your Future platform

Three more fascinating listens from our podcast  series highlighting careers in horticulture – Cultivate Your Future.

Another three fascinating episodes of our careers podcast, Cultivate Your Future have just landed.

Hear from sports turf specialist, David Smith, plant scientist, Dr Madalena Vaz Monteiro and arboriculturist James Gadd, about the work they do and be inspired to expand your horizons with a career in horticulture.

Dr Madalena Vaz Monteiro

Horticulture is a home to endless study, innovation and learning and on this episode of the Cultivate Your Future podcast Neville Stein is shining a light on where horticulture meets cutting edge science, because his guest is plant scientist, Dr Madalena Vaz Monteiro.

Madalena works for part of the Forestry Commission’s research division, and as you’ll hear, a lot of her work revolves around the role that plants and trees can play in combating climate change. She also explains a little about the part of the Forestry Commission that she works for, the Urban Forest Research Group.  For more information about Forest Research visit www.forestresearch.gov.uk

James Gadd

Neville Stein’s guest on this episode of the podcast works in one of horticulture’s most hands-on areas, Arboriculture.

James Gadd is a Director of Gadd Brothers Trees and Landscape and as an arboricultural professional he works with amenity trees – those found in private gardens, public parks and open spaces, schools, churchyards, playgrounds, urban woodlands and nature reserves and alongside roads, railway lines and routes for utilities like electricity pylons. That’s a role which sees him mix heavy machinery, heights, problem solving and things that sound like they could be from a Mission Impossible movie, as well as conservation and planting of trees.

As someone running a business, James tells us a little about what he’s looking for when he hires staff, how to get started in the industry, and reveals some of the things that some people don’t realise are part of the job.

David Smith

In this episode of Cultivate Your Future, Colegrave Seabrook Foundation Trustee, Neville Stein, is in conversation with an unsung hero of the horticultural world.

Some people might not have even considered David’s role, but we would notice pretty quickly if there was nobody doing his job, because without people like David, there’d be no sport. Well, less sport perhaps.

David Smith, a turf care specialist whose expertise has made many sporting events possible.
So, if you’re interested in finding out how to bring your horticultural skills to the golf course, tennis court or football pitch, this is the podcast for you.
You’ll hear a little about what a groundskeeper does but also about how to create a business or buy into a franchise, so there’s a lot to take in here.
